The Ministry of Industry and Trade works closely with fruits exporter and localties to adopt suitable policies to promote Vietnamese agricultural products’ exportation.
As a tropical country, especially in the southwestern region, a land rich with orchards all year round, Vietnam possesses various fruits that few countries have. It comes as no surprise that fruit has always been the most special export item in the agricultural sector for many years. Staggering growth rates have consistently maintained between 20-30% in the past ten years. Besides, Vietnam is currently one of the biggest fruit exporters in Southeastern Asia.
Opportunities from new markets
The latest statistics show that the total export turnover of Vietnam to the China in the first eight months of 2020 is 27.35 billion USD. The group of fruits has export turnover reached US $ 1.31 billion, down 25.25% over the same period in 2019. The main reason for this is the influence of the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, China takes numerous measures to control Vietnam’s exports with stricter requirements on quarantine, traceability, food safety, and hygiene.
However, in return, the total export revenue to other major markets such as ASEAN, the United States, the EU, Korea, and Japan have achieved outstanding growth. The fruit export market structure has positive changes. Because it reduces dependence on the Chinese market and increases exports to these potential markets. It may be a new opportunity for us to diversify and focus on more demanding needs.
Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports to Asian markets (Japan, South Korea, ASEAN, …) will continue to grow due to market size and considerable consumption, similar consumption habits, and geographical location, convenient for transportation.
At the end of May 2020, fruits exporter in Vietnam successfully exported the first batch of lychee from Hai Duong province to Singapore, the US, and Australia. The area of lychee produced according to GlobalGAP standards of Hai Duong for export is estimated to be about 1,500 tons.
Quality improvement is the decisive factor for fruits exporter to open new markets
Despite specific achievements, fruits exporter in Vietnam still need more breakthroughs to dominate the world market. Due to the small production scale, the specialized cultivation area only accounts for less than 20% of the total area. Consequently, product quality is not similar. It isn’t easy to control supply and apply world standards to negotiate for quality and food safety management recognition. Despite being reduced to 0% by foreign countries, tropical fruits in Vietnam have yet to penetrate many markets.
Currently, many steps have been taken to tackle this problem. The main purpose is to synchronously and drastically implement the following contents:
• Restructuring agricultural production.
• Strengthen supply control and production direction associated with market signals; gradually improve and stabilize the quality of agricultural exports.
• Guiding farmers about the importing country’s standards and suitable production and farming methods to meet those standards.
• Database on food safety measures in significant export markets.
